Randolph Historical Society to host talk tomorrow Randolph Herald
15.09.09
The Randolph Recorded Society will begin its fall season with a program by President Mr. Henry Cooke IV about historical items won from Internet auctions Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m., at the Jonathan Belcher Congress, 360 No. Main Street, Randolph
Last year was the 146th anniversary of the epic Civil War Affray of Antietam Creek (or Sharpsville, according to Southern chroniclers). It coincided with the society’s union date, so it was the subject of the meeting. A short while later there was a listing on an Internet on-line auction milieu for a daguerreotype of Esther Niles who was identified as the wife of a Captain Niles of Randolph.
Captain Niles was the commander of Ensemble E, of the 35th Massachusetts Regiment that fought at the battle. He was one of the approximate 35 casualties among that unit; the greatest million of dead and injured on any one day for Randolph soldiers in battle, before or since. The funeral for Captain Niles was a larger tragedy in the town, covered in great detail by the local newspapers.

If a daguerreotype is authentic how do you get the value?

The daguerreotype is cut unwrap so the silver plate can be removed, but still has it's original covering. The man in the picture looks like he was a brick mason from what I can see. I don't dearth to sell, I just need to know if I need to insure it!
Since this is something of a specialty, I expect I would ask a specialist. There is a daguerroetype society, and they list a way to contact them on their web site

At least one fellow of this society, I keep thinking his name is Berg or Burg.. Paul Berg I think.. does seminars on significant the difference between daguerreotype, tintype and .. cant remember the third thing.. but I think it also goes into how to put a value on them as well.
I would contact the polite society and ask them if they have criteria for putting a value on such an item.

Brake your yellow pages for antique dealers and then have them take a look at it for you if that is something they deal with. Pretend like you want to peddle it and they will lowball you but then you will get at the least a starting value for it by taking what they offer and doubling it.

Can a person get fingerprints off a daguerreotype without ruining the picture?

I found I had a daguerrotype in the inventive wrapping. There are so many fingerprints on it it makes it impossible to recognize the face of the man on it.
Can a person clean a daguerrotype without ruining it?
Daguerreotypes are something that you dont need to try to clean on your own unless you really know what you are doing. Many a daguerreotypes have been destroyed for the exact same reason that you are expos. They try to clean the dags themselves but little do they realize just how thin the image is on the silver plate hence the reason as to why daguerreotypes are almost always found in a measly wood and glass case. You are best to contact one of the preservationist from this website http://www.daguerre.org/ if you cant get anyone from there try the webmaster at newdags.com
I myself am a newfangled dagguereotypist and am quite familiar with the delicate nature of these photos, sometimes all you have to do is brush up against an abrasive surface and the copy is gone. So the idea of using 409 and a terry cloth just isnt going to drudgery, maybe with an ambrotype or tintype, but not with a dag. Not to mention that dags are historical treasures, just consider that personally last year who stumbled onto an early dag portrait of Abraham Lincoln, as I recall that portrait sold for a few hundred thousand dollars. Also the other puzzle with scanning daguerreotypes is the fact that dagguereotypes can only be seen from certain angles, usually when viewed presently it may seem to be a negative or for that matter nothing but silver, so if you scan the image it would most likely appear totally silver or vague and reversed in tonality. On the other hand if you can see your dag from all angles without a problem then you may have a ambrotype/tintype which are far more commonplace than dags.

IF: Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your guv'nor when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be exhausted by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too warn of:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and D And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to commission a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:
If you can put to rights one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never speak a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so suspend b continue on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common excite, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of reserve run - Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
