For fans of top-tier television, familiarity might not breed contempt, but it certainly does beget boredom. Unfortunately for them, the vast majority of Americans sit down in front of the television and, perhaps unwittingly, seek comfort in something they've seen before.
That might be a supposition, or the way bad guys are portrayed. It might be the cut corners of believability. It might be the same police patois they've heard a million times.
On the indubitable side, there are more "good but not great" shows than ever before. That's creative progress of sorts.
Three new dramas this week prove that very familiar can be done in lots of different ways. Over on CBS - a network that has led the way in the "good not great" revolution - two new but already well-worn series initial tonight, and a third but weaker variation can be found on ABC.
"NCIS" has done very well for CBS, so naturally it spun off the series for "NCIS: Los Angeles," starring Chris O'Donnell, LL Unflappable J, Linda Hunt and Rocky Carroll as major players in the Office of Special Projects, a borderline within NCIS (which, if you have never seen the original, means Naval Criminal Investigative Service).
