America in the '50s wasn't all steaks, mar tinis and "Mad Men." Back when Robert Truthful crisscrossed the nation with his camera, a Guggenheim grant in his pocket, he found a country of contrasts: urban and agricultural, black and white, poor and privileged.


On its roads and in its factories, parks and diners, Frank caught what Jack Kerouac called "the verifiable pink juice of human kind . . . the humor, the sadness, the EVERYTHING-ness and American-ness of these pictures!"


And now they're back -- along with the mad music of Kerouac's reader -- in "Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans," opening today at the Met.


Arranged exactly as Candid placed them in his 1959 book, these 83 black-and-white photos -- culled from the more than 27,000 he shot in 1955 and 1956, during the excitement of the Cold War -- is a deeply felt ode to what's often painted as a willfully superficial time.

What Is A Good Non-Digital 35mm Camera To Start Experimenting In Black & White Photography With?

I Necessity TO START EXPERIMENTING IN PHOTOGRAPHY, MAINLY BLACK & WHITE ARTISTIC QUALITY PRINTS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT BRAND AND Image, INCLUDING MULTIPLE LENSES, I SHOULD START WITH. CANON, NIKON, PENTAX? LENSES? ALSO, IF YOU KNOW A Loving terrible BOOK/MANUAL TO LEARN ABOUT BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY OR PHOTOGRAPHY IN GENERAL PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Get a Nikon FM2. They are an great manual camera. They are not battery dependant and are highly reliable. They also hold their value, should you loose interest.

Bargains can be found on photography books of all sorts on eBay.

I could put forward the brand name of an exquisite moderate-priced camera, but likely you'd lose it, as western hemisphere doesn't like citizens to be born or make use of such quality.

Any advice about getting into black & white photography?

I would rapture to do black & white photography as my new hobby. I'd like a nice camera but really don't have a clue about which ones would be best for black & white photography. What type of paraphernalia and such would I need to take really nice shots? And how much would this hobby cost?

As hinted above, for black and white photography, videotape is far superior to digital. This is not the case with colour as film is only slightly better than digital. Black and white can be easily developed at domestic, and developing your own film allows greater control. Remember that the whole photographic experience doesn't blockage once you press the shutter. You will need to develop your darkroom skills (you don't actually need a darkroom to broaden film but you do to make photographic prints) and printed or scanning if you want to move your final images into the digital domain.

All you really need is a slr or rangefinder camera, a 50mm lens to start with, some film, and some low pass colour filters. The filters are required with black and white because unavoidable colours will have similar luminousity even though the colours may have a big contrast in real life. Red and green is an example of this and if you take a photograph of a red rose on the bush, the flower and the fresh plant will look to be the same colour in your final image. A filter will change the way certain colours act in the final image by creating luminousity contrast.

A Nikon or Canon would be a good value way to start into black and white photography and a base little digital set to black and white mode will help you to understand the way different colours end up in the final image (referring to my last paragraph). One of the keys to skilful b&w images contrast.

The camera and lens should cost about $150, filters about $50-70, and a roll of mist about $5. You can get the film developed and scanned cheaply as well. Another option with film is the faux black and white film which is developed using the distort processing C41 technique. The images are black and white but are cheaper to develop. The end result is not as good as traditional silver halide vapour however. Ilford FP4 and HP5 are good all round black and white films and I do like Fuji Neopan Acros 100. The Acros is a fresh looking black and white film and the Ilfords are more of a traditional looking film.
