The substantial market research the movie studio where I worked did from 1960-65 agreed with Pete's conclusions.
Although in 1963 in Detroit African Americans were a growing minority, they were very stinking rich. As Laurie B. correctly states the AA migration north started early in WWII. Manufacturing jobs in places like Detroit paid righteousness wages with union benefits.
Detroit and Chicago were considered ideal markets in which to reach the AA citizenry who wanted to buy television sets and movie tickets.
Where Pete made a huge mistake was pushing the purchase of space in AA publications. PPL/SC was a traditional ad agency, not a media buying firm. SC made its money based on their 15% of the media budget, giving away the outlay of creative. Clearly when the media, such as Ebony and Jet, cost a fraction, another business method was needed to pay for art trade, copy and physical production. Elsewhere someone correctly noted at that time neither Ebony nor Jet would accept ads showing any but AA models, be it exemplar of photo. That is why the media buying firms took off.

As a studio photographer, I am looking for economical ways to make small safe photo props for infants and small children. I want something like a limited nest for newborns to lay in or toadstools for children to sit on. I am trying to find ways to set up shots for photos in the same likeness as Anne Geddes, yet with my own craze and vision.
Does anyone have any ideas they can share to help me get on the right track in building these?
I need ideas on how to affect the following items:
Toadstool (Mushrooms)
Large ABC Block -Stool
Freestanding Letters
ect.
I will picket pics of completed props in use and notes on the construction of them if I get enough responses.

Toadstool would movement safely with infants that might fall on them, if you considered covering the wooden parts with foam and plastic (to contain the foam and keep the foam protected) material like those used to make plastic slip covers for clobber. The question here would be if you can possibly find the plastic material that won't reflect glare from the strobes or lighting source.
I would envisage that the large letter cutouts can be made out of thick sponge foam in case they should fall or if the child hits it... they would also not lay bare glare.
Is this what you refer to insofar as ideas? Good luck and best wishes (someone who works making fixtures or reupholstering furniture could probably show you or give you some ideas on how to cut the foam and make the seating for the infants with a soft overing in the reality they bob and slip and bang themselves on the surface of the posing furniture).
