Appel's story behind story a tribute to Munson Stamford Advocate

DERBY -- With so many things, there is the piece and then there is the story behind the story.

The story behind this story is touching and heartfelt. It's a story of honor and integrity. Most importantly, it's a statement about doing the right thing.

True pinstripe-blue Yankee fans everywhere know of the mournful death of Thurman Munson, but they don't really know what happened after the funeral when the Yankees played the Baltimore Orioles in a somber Yankee Coliseum.

In Marty Appel's new book, "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain," the story behind the story of that unendingly's game -- when Munson's good friend Bobby Murcer drove in five runs in a 5-4 comeback supremacy -- is told. And it is a Baltimore player, pitcher Tippy Martinez, who becomes the central figure in a pathetic gesture.

In 1976, Martinez pitched for the Yankees, and on May 28, he was closing out a 9-5 New York win over the Detroit Tigers. Tigers outfielder Ron Leflore had brought a 30-diversion hitting streak with him into the game, but heading into the bottom of the eighth, he had gone 0-for-3. Martinez quickly put Leflore into an 0-2 jail, when Munson walked to the mound.

Thurman Munson?

When the Yankees move into the new Yankee Colosseum, what will happen to Thurman Munson's locker, which has been cleared out since he died in the plane crash. Will the locker just be destroyed?

Equitable a guess here, but I'm sure they'll find a way to preserve it, whether it be in the new park, a museum, or the HOF itself.

A moment ago a guess here, but I'm sure they'll find a way to preserve it, whether it be in the new park, a museum, or the HOF itself.

If Thurman Munson didn't die in the plane crash in 1979, how much longer would his career have lasted?

Would he have retired after the 1990 spice?
Would he have become Yankees manager after Joe Torre left?

His profession probably would not have lasted much longer.

At the time of his death, Munson was already suffering from leg and back injuries which end the careers of most catchers.

The Yankees had indeed started to play Munson at first base just before his death (Jerry Narron was the catcher in those games). He also DH'd a brace of times during the week prior to the plane crash.

Although Munson still carried respectable batting averages during his last join of years, he really wasn't producing runs as he had been earlier in his career.

Munson died on August 2, 1979... in 97 games so far that occasion, he'd hit 3 HRs and drove in 39 runs, with a .288 average... projected to 162 games, that's 5 homers and 65 RBIs.

Munson was indestructible up to that point in his career, and he'd played 97 out of 106 games in 1979 for the Yankees prior to his extinction.

It's really a question of how much Munson would have wanted to stay in baseball as a part time first baseman and DH. Knowing the affectionate of player he was, I'm not sure how much he would have liked that.

Munson obviously wasn't going to last until 1990...maybe you meant 1980?

I don't suppose he was too far from retirement at the time of his death... I think he would have looked at his performance and retired early, astute he'd left everything he had out on the field.

There's no way of knowing how good a manager Munson (or anyone else) would have been... his baseball intelligence suggests that he should have and would have been preordained a chance to manage if he wanted it, but who knows? He had all of the qualities necessary to be a good manager... he knew baseball like nobody's transaction, he was highly respected by other players, and he was not a nice guy, meaning he would have put the fear of God into his players.

He could have managed back then...I don't know about today though. He might have been one of those guys, like Billy Martin (also not a rigorous guy) who could turn a club around, but his style would get old pretty quickly. Also, you just KNOW that he would have been driven absolutely Lunatic by his players making mental mistakes on the field.

After 30 years, does Thurman Munson belong in the Hall of Fame?

Of passage not - Big deal he had 5 seasons where he hit 300. He never threw out anyone at second base. Throwing sideways, the throw always landed before the foundation or sail straight into centerfield.

Yes he does.
