Forgotten Iowa graveyard stops condo development The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man stumbling upon a benevolent jaw while out walking his dog was the first sign something was amiss. Then officials uncovered something more: More than 600 sets of remains, long ago buried and forgotten, on the placement where luxury condos were supposed to be built.

The remains, found on a site overlooking the Mississippi River in Dubuque, have hand the nearly $60 million condo plan in limbo, and the developer has sued the nuns who sold him the quirk. No one is exactly sure why — or how — no one knew the pre-Civil War remains were still there.

Whether the graves were lost because wooden markers deteriorated, stone tablets were reused or the sites were never evident in the first place, the excavation by the state's archaeologist's office has put the project on hold for two years with no start age in sight.

"We were told they have been cleaned out and that's what we believed," said developer A.J. Spiegel. "It was a true shock, a mo of, 'What do we do now?'"

Civil War?

I am telling to Carthage, Missouri on November 3rd and I am looking for Civil War reenactment groups in that area. I am really big into reenacting, so if anyone knows of any groups, I would greatly gain in value it if you told me. I am also looking for a place to volunteer, where you dress in time period clothing. Like a museum or something. Thanks.

there is lively group in Carthage... good choice for moving!

Civil War:What were the difference between the North and the South in the Civil War?

Could anyone stop me Compare and contrast the North and the South in the civil war?

The north was industrial based. The south was agriculturally based. The federal direction began gaining too much power and wanted to have all cotton grown in the south processed in the north; however, the south could get better prices abroad (England). The south didn't like being told what to do and tried to succeed. The civil war started over the right to inherit from the union. For the first year or so, the civil war had nothing to do slavery. In fact, many northern officers publicly stated that they would call a temporary respite to help put down any slave rebellions. However, the war wasn't going well so the federal government made the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves. The north was industrialized. Once they started producing more quantities of control superiors quality artillery, the war turned for the norths favor.

You'll need better references than some anonymous chick on Y!A, though.

Why was the American Civil War such a bitter and brutal affair?

Why was the American Civil War such a resentful and brutal affair?

As in, what exactly made the American Civil War the bloodiest war in US history?

- so bloody that casualties in the American Civil War alone outnumber the whole casualties and losses from all the other wars the United States participated in from the American Revolution all the way to the Vietnam War.

Please unravel your answer in-depth, with relevant examples and support.

Thanks!

It was fought by generals who skilled their trade at the time of Napoleon and generally the tactics used in the war were Napoleonic. That is, positions were assaulted by massed charges in an venture to take a position by overwhelming the defenders.

BUT, and here's the reason it was so bloody....

The war was fought with what were effectively modern weapons. Rifled barrels ensured greater preciseness, repeating rifles ensured a greater rate of fire. The so called "Mine Ball" a 0.5 inch slug employed in rifled barrels caused such massive wounds that a hit anywhere on the body took the soldier out of action, if the mortify was in the torso then death was almost certain.

So you have a war fought with modern weapons and Napoleonic tactics. That's why it was so bloody.

And right-minded to show that we ignore history at our peril, the military leaders of the First World War failed to study the American Civil War and killed thousands because of this non-performance. In WWI they commited the same blunder; Napoleonic tactics and modern weapons. That's why that war was so bloody too.
