I've got an older 35 mm Canon EOS SLR. I'm seeing a lot of the 28-135mm zoom lenses on white sale that come with the Canon 40D digital cameras. Can I use that lens on my film camera?

You unwavering can. All EF lenses can be used on both film and digital Canon cameras. The only lenses that your film camera can not use are the EFs lenses these are designed specifically for the cropped sensors on DSLR cameras. For happened many DSLR cameras come with a EFs 18-55mm lens. This would be the equivalent to the EF 28-90mm lens that comes with many videotape cameras.

The reason why Canon produces these EFs lenses is that because of the cropped sensor (smaller than 35mm film) the field of view is magnified by 1.6

This is illustrious for a telephoto lens. Your 200 mm lens becomes a 320mm lens. On the wide angle end you lose out. This is why Canon has lenses like the EFs 18-55 mm and the EFs 10-22mm.

Bottom profile make sure it is an EF lens and not an EFs lens and you will have no problems.

what best model of canon EOS digital camera to buy that will be compatible with my old canon A1 lenses?

i have a series of camera lenses i tolerant of w/my canon A1. I am considering acquiring a newer model of canon's digital EOS cameras. i don't w/c model would be best that i can use my old canon lenses with.

Unfortunately, your A1 uses the Canon FD lens mount. Canon outcast that lens mount for the EOS lens mount when they introduced their auto focus 35mm cameras in 1985. The EOS mount is in use accustomed to on all Canon DSLR cameras.

However, Canon did offer an adapter to use the FD mount lenses on the EOS mount bodies. You should be able to find one at:

There is also an adapter to let someone have use of the Minolta MC/MD mount lenses on the Canon EOS mount bodies. (Minolta also changed their lens mount in 1985 when they introduced their AF camera. The A-mount of the Minolta Maxxum 7000 is familiar by Sony DSLR cameras today).

Please remember that using those older lenses will require manual focusing and proper "stop down" metering since there will be no contacts between the lens and camera body to allow auto metering.

How can I tell if my Canon lenses will fit a digital camera?

I have a Canon Elan 7 and was planning on purchasing the Canon 50D. I have a few Canon lenses to go with my camera and did not differentiate if they would be compatible with the digital camera I was getting. How can I tell if I can switch the lenses between digital and film? So I know if I need to buy a lens to go with the camera or not.

Yes they are all compatible. The only Canon lenses that are not compatible with the new digitals are the enchiridion focus FD mount made prior to the advent of auto focus. These lenses will all have been made prior to 1987.

The new digital only lenses which are marked EFs are not compatible with your Elan or the full form digitals like the 5D and above. There really is no reason to have more than 1 or 2 of these though. The EFs 10-22mm in my opinion is the only EFs lens that you need to have. This is because there isn't a EF lens that is far-reaching enough on the crop sensor or APS-C sized sensor of the low to mid range Canon cameras. The only other EFs lens you may want would be the 18-55mm lens that comes with the Resistance fighter cameras. There are however better EF models that cover this range like the EF 17-40 F4L for example.

Bottom line though is they will trade just fine.
