Art community shines spotlight on Rochester museums and galleries RocNow

Rochester and its artists will possess a place of honor at local museums this season.

From a major display by metal sculptor Albert Paley to a series of exhibits about Rochester, the megalopolis will find diverse reflections of its changing face for its 175th anniversary. Private galleries also will feature locality painters and sculptors’ latest creations.

Here’s a selective tour of upcoming attractions:

The Cenotaph Art Gallery at 500 University Ave. will offer a wide palette of styles with major portrait, fabric and sculpt shows. Paint Made Flesh (Oct. 25-Jan. 3), features 20th-century paintings of the human character by such masters as Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, Lucien Freud and Julian Schnabel. Fashioning Kimono (Jan. 31-April 4) displays 97 Japanese kimonos ranging from embroidered ceremony costumes to Art Deco patterns. Albert Paley in the 21st Century (May 1-June 27) displays latest metal sculptures, drawings and models by the renowned Rochester artist.
