Readers' Voices: Public and Private Trauma New York Times

Comments are still coming in.

No enthral we’ve tackled in the first four months of the Lens blog has touched quite so raw a nerve as our Sept. 4 affix (” Behind the Scenes: To Publish or Not? “) about a decision by The Associated Press to distribute a photograph charmed in Afghanistan by Julie Jacobson. It showed Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard, 21, of the Marines, after he was mortally wounded during a Taliban bushwhack last month. The picture was made available to A.P. members over the objections of John Bernard, Corporal Bernard’s cur, and of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates . Some members of the A.P. cooperative chose to publish it. Others, like The New York Times, showed it only on their Web sites. Still others avoided using it all in all.

To gauge from more than 650 comments, readers felt passionately about the question. But many did not see it as a black-and-white issue. There weren’t remarkably two sides to the discussion as much as there was a continuum of opinion. Many who strongly favored the A.P.’s decision acknowledged that the additional hardship brought to Corporal Bernard’s family was a high price to pay for public enlightenment. Many who strongly opposed the A.P.’s purposefulness to release the picture conceded that the news organization was within its lawful right to do so.

Old black and white family photos ink and color printer question?

Hi, I have an Epson Color 980 computer printer and I'm duplicating and printing old years 1890 to 1930 pictures so my unexceptional family will have copies. I'm doing this on hp premium plus inkjet glossy photo paper 8 1/2 X 11, 11.5 mil organ. I'm using Inksel cartridges I get for myself at work. Should I worry that the ink or paper will fade in the future? Any suggestions on purchasing the right stuff? Also, my friend wants to buy the best and cheapest but quality printer for large color prints (for people, birds, sunsets etc) for her Dell Computer she got last year. Should she get any definitive Epson, Canon or what printer? I went online to look for reviews but it's very confusing. Thank you for any suggestions. Uncordial Breeze!

If you lack to ensure that there is no fading, you may want to consider having them reproduced in a regular photo shop. The photos I printed in an old Epson printer mainly faded. The new generation printers claim 'no fading' but that can't be proven until years from now.
Also when printing photos, the ink will cost more than if you have it printed exterior.
That's just a suggestion.
As far as choice of computer printer, Epson, Canon and HP are usually tops but I am partial to Canon. Reviews are confusing because diferernt people would have another experiences with even the same printer. That's why any of the top brands are ok. You also have to choose in terms of your needs. There are many printers that offer a lot of features that you may not distress but would be paying a premium for.
It's best you use the "compare products' in sites like pcmag.com for the choices you have made to balm you decide

use Epson's DuraBrite Inks.

where do I get information on the best way to scan old black and white photos and digitalize them?

I'm annoying to scan old black and white family photos that date back to the beginning of the last century. I have a Canonscan LIDE 500 F scanner that I don't really concern for and I have Photoshop--the full-blown version-- but I don't think I'm computer literate enough to get the pictures properly touched up. I guess what I'm looking for is the to the fullest extent scanner that will be easy to understand. And is there a scanner whose software could do what I am having problems doing with PhotoShop? In other words, I'm as likely as not taking on a job that I don't have the technical knowledge to do, but I want to do it myself.

You identify I had my heart set on getting a Nikon Coolscan for years, but finally went a step 'lower' to a prostrate bed scanner that scans various sizes of film negatives, slides, photos, etc. The scanner is the Epson Standard 4990 Photo, and comes bundled with Silverfast SE scanning software. One of the features you definately hunger for is something called Digital Ice, this feature is nice to have because it automatically fixes defects, but it significantly lengthens scanning occasionally, and it does not work with prints, Kodachrome slides or conventional black and white negatives. *

For color corection software on scanning prints you should look at Kodak Digital ROC... whitch is nearby as a Photoshop plug in for around $50.*

* Both reference an article in Maximum PC magazine February 2006 "Rekindle and Preserve Your Photos" by Tom Halfhill.

I know none of this had addressed scanning Black and White but in that article, the author used tools in Photoshop to get very tangibles results with his black and white photos.

I would do some searching on scanning old black and white photographs. If cant find any good comprehensive guides send me a Tommy Atkins message.

Good luck.

Family Photographs

“He made me a split second realize that photographs could reach eternity through the moment.”- Henri Cartier-Bresson (French Photographer)

On Saturday, my church held a "Family Story Fair" providing the public with information on Genealogy. I volunteered to put together a handout on preserving family photos. Here is what I learned:

Do's and Don'ts for preserving family photosFully classify and label all photos so people won’t be forgotten.Use soft pencils like 6B or special ink. Never use ballpoint pens.Do not use rubber solder, glue, magnetic pages, or adhesive tape in albums.
Old albums are like diaries; don’t take them separately. The exception is magnetic Vinyl album pages emit harmful fumes that damage photos. (Vinyl smells greasy and the pages are sticky.) Use only Mylar or plastic labeled “for archival storage”.
Keep photos away from areas that may become hot, humid or bright. Heat, moisture & light are bad for photos and may encourage mildew growth.
Keep photos clean. Oils from fingers can damage the fog.

If you want to display a photo or include it in a child’s scrapbook, use a copy and keep the original safely preserved. When framing a photograph, keep an air intermission between the photograph and the glass.
Copy home movie film and original videos, and use these copies to absorb most of the viewing fray and tear.
As insurance against catastrophic loss, store your negatives far away from your prints. Send copies of favorite photographs to friends and family.
Even the first-class color film will fade within 50 years. Black and White photos may last at most 150 years.
Digital copies of your esteemed memories won’t fade but computer hard disks will crash. CD discs...
