There is such bursary in the behavioral sciences literature. There are studies that deal with the imprinting of the colors white and black in newborns and infants. Because of the neurologic situation of the rods and cones in the retina, the physiology of the optic nerve and the maturation of the area in the brain that discriminates epitome and visual cues, infants only see black and white for a period that could last as long a six months. Here is when and why these preference toward white are made. Somehow, as the theory goes, infants fill out a value judgment based on their mother’s skin color. White represents hard-nosed things while black represents negative things. This could be proved by showing an infant photographs of white and black faces. Infants look more critically and longer at the black faces taxing to make sense of what they perceive as unfamiliar. Hence, we are all destined to be racists and this tendency

I saw them in an art gallery on Cannery Row in Monterey, California around 10 years ago. They were large paintings, all scenes of mobsters and shootings. They were mostly black, white and red from the blood. I'm having the hardest beat finding them.

Can anyone expound how each of these are shown in a black and white painting?
Form
Line
Shape
Color
Texture
Space
Value
Disparity
These are all elements of monochrome and painting and are related to each other and interact. One or more can be applied to each other to represent others in this group. A grasp of all these are essential to be able to unholster and especially paint.
Artists will sometimes paint a monochrome picture to learn these elements without color or do a "value examine" for composition validation.
Form - 1 dimensional shape, example a square, or gird
Line - self explanatory, a line
Shape - 3 dimensional shape, example, cylinder or stratum
Color - either not represented or by different values
Texture - dots, thin lines, cross hatches
Spell - self explanatory, a void or perspective applied to separate objects in the painting. Measurements and value variation
Value - variations in intensity of blacks. Shades of grays
Contrast - Diverse values as compared with each other

I have a 1910 framed Arthur J Elsley painting. I would righteous like to know if he made any black and white paintings. The painting has brush smeres and stuff on it thus making me come to a conclusion that it is a painting . Any way any info is much appreciated. Thanks.
As distinguished by the link below there is quite a bit about Elsley.Without seeing the image it would be difficult to comment on what you have. It maybe that the work was a value swatting,a preliminary study for a later further developed painting. Values being the range between dark and light or white and black with all the grays in between.. Artist might do a value inquiry then apply "washes" or "glazes of color over the values study to get an suggestion of how the shading of the colors might look. Or possibly it's an etching or lithographic print. But if it is an original Elsley you may have something there. If all of the links below reveal his popularity. Asking an appraiser would be a good idea. Link:
