Corporal Toby Box, 30, from London , is a sniper with the RAF's Make Protection Wing. He spends days out in the field in Afghanistan, usually dug in to a small hole from where the spotter relays nous back to Kandahar airbase. Once in place, the two men are unable to break cover, cook food or move more than a few feet privileged their cocoon.
Corporal Box and his spotter dig out their hole under cover of darkness and it's always filled in at the end of a mission. They use folding shovels that they have carried in their kit along with all the kit they need: a high-powered Nikon camera, telescopic sight, an Accuracy International L96A1 sniper pillage, rations and, most importantly, litres of water.

About binoculars: Is Nikon 8x40 Action Extreme ATB good for whale watching on land and on the boat?

This is my first ever to purchase a binocular. I can't afford those high end ones at $1,000 & up, but under $200 is ok.
I read through a few websites on how to judge a binocular for whale watching. It seems like 8 x 40 is ideal. On the Amazon.com, this Nikon binocular recieved all 5 stars and costs only around $120. Do you all come?
I want to start to do whale watching (living by Pacific Coast) on land and maby on the vessel in the future, but also plan to use my first binocular to do hiking, bird watching, black bear & grizzly have watching as well. I know I sound a bit too greedy but I'm only a student... If this Nikon binocular would do a good job for whale watching primarily and other activities, I probably will go for it.

I read your answer to a question about binocular. You seem to be very knoweldgable about binoculars. Do you have any feel with the binocular for whale watching? What would you recomand?
These are superlative binoculars. One thing to be aware of. They are probably not water proof even though they say they are, so if you take them on a boat be just a little careful. Don't disquiet too much though. I took a pair of non-waterproof binoculars out on Monterrey Bay. They worked just fine. These have a super wide clearing of view which makes them great for bird watching. And 8x40 are great for just about everything. I would not advise holding them under the focet to cleaning off the sea salt. It might work but as I said be just a little careful.
One thing that might be of interest. A rule of thumb is that you get about 10% crap-shooter performance for every doubling of price. So you see, these are going to be excellent binoculars.
Here is where you can buy them for $120 including postage. I have bought 2 match up from these folks. A pair for my son and a pair for me. And I recommend them. Ask them if you can hold these under the focet to wash off sea salt. They will be versed more about them than I do. I had a pair of Nikon binoculars that unfortunately were stolen in Ecuador. They were great.

Would these be considered skilful for beginner sky gazing as well as using them for terrestrial use? I have not bought them yet, but I plan to soon.

I looked at a join of Nikon 8 X 40 also some Leupold,Bosh & lomb & cabela's brand name others 10 X 40 size I equitable want a great pair to have & use for when I'm outdoors.
Both 8x40 and 10x40 are very acclaimed with wildlife viewers. The 8x40 generally have a wider field of view which is very beneficial for trying to find flying birds or birds in branches of trees. 8x40 have less shake of the image but not noticeably less magnification. I have both and I can barely tell the difference. Select a pair of roof prism binos as they are unreservedly urinate proof and fog proof. You can spend a lot of money on a pair, up to $3000 but generally speaking you get only about 10% change for the better in performance for each doubling in price. So somewhere in the $200 to $700 price range is really good fulfilment fore a reasonable price. In the higher price range you generally get locking diopter setting, which is something I really like. One of my pairs has it and one does not. The more expensive pairs are marketed mainly to birders, who are always upsetting to impress other birders with their optics.
Nikon makes some outstanding binoculars, but they are very expensive. I once had a pair.
Among the less expensive but very good pairs are these:
Economical, excellent eye relief if you should ever have to wear glasses, decent field of view but not great, very poor guarded focus but not too important if you are not interested in dragon flies or butterflies.
Vortex Diamondback is in the same price trade mark Aga but has some advantages. Wider field of view and much closer focus.
I do not have the courage of one's convictions pretend that either of these have locking diopter adjustment though. Another nice feature that some binos have and some do no is twist up eye cups. They are normally found in the more dear binos.
