Martinsburg veteran recalls WWII in Pacific Martinsburg Journal

Senior editor's note: The Journal's annual Unsung Heroes feature, which runs each Monday from Memorial Day to Old-timer's Day, profiles U.S. veterans who served in wars and conflicts from World War II to the present.

MARTINSBURG - When Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941, Walter "Wally" Titchenell was 16 years old and working in a Baltimore shipyard.

The teen enlisted in the military straight off away, getting his mother to sign papers for him because he wasn't 18.

Choosing the Navy was easy because of his shipyard happening, Titchenell recalled during an interview Saturday in his apartment at Senior Towers in Martinsburg.

After a few months of training, Titchenell was sent to Norfolk, Va., and joined the group of the USS Columbia CL-56.

"We got on a ship and went out to the Pacific, and it was a boom-boom, bang-bang deal," he said.

By time 1942, the USS Columbia was in action, participating in the final phases of the Guadalcanal Campaign, according to tidings from the Naval Historical Center.

I have this contest thing i have to do for school. A robbery waws taken place on November 18th, 1805. A gaurd says he has seen two men anatomy 100 yards away(about 300 ft). HE says he could identify one of the two men's features because he had binoculars. My team is defending the man who was accused of treason. Were binoculars gifted to used by a gaurd who works for the Federal Weapons Warehouse. And what would else help is the year they were invented in.
