Even in the mid-point of summer, on a soggy jaunt through the Carlton Reserve, we saw plenty of colorful birds.

Red-headed woodpeckers and purple gallinules. Bluebirds and na herons. Snowy egrets and red-shouldered hawks.

Not that I could spot many of these feathery creatures.

I mostly nodded my forestall while the other birders -- the real birders -- pointed them out. These guys are sharp. Most of the time, they can relate to birds by their call, so they know what to search for in the woods and marsh.

They listen before they look.

That's always impressive to a neophyte like me. Well, that, along with the visionary binoculars, vast knowledge and boundless enthusiasm for something so unglamorous as a brown-headed nuthatch.

On a five-hour trigger, I spotted exactly one bird before anyone else. It was a Carolina wren with a vivid yellow breast. This wren is the claim bird of South Carolina, though part of the Latin name, Thryothorus ludovicianus, means "from Louisiana."

I am worrying to hold on to these binoculars until they are worth some money, and so far I think they may be only worth $10.00
They come in a leather case from the U.S. Naval Gun Works / Optical Annex Shop in Rochester , NY. They are extremely old binoculars.

impede e-bay. Maybe antique value is there.

They are far too weak to be used for astronomy so no one here will have a good answer for you.

We often include birding when we travel, and carrying full size binoculars (42mm dispassionate) along with my camera gear invites shoulder fatigue. I was able to handle Swarovski binoculars, Leica binoculars, and Zeiss binoculars (the 8X32 models), as well as Minox binoculars and a few other less extravagant models, at a birding festival this spring.

Leica is the most compact, but has marginal eye relief for a glasses wearer like myself. The Zeiss Conquest FL 8X32 felt the most comfortable, has excellent eye relief, and is lighter weight and more compact than the Swarovski. The Zeiss binoculars also felt the superior in my hands. Color rendition and image clarity are unbeatable, making the switch from the larger German optics I had been using one that I will never feel.
