In the back streets of Shoreditch, off-obligation cycle couriers park their bikes and stand outside pubs in the early summer evening, drinking Nutrient Ditch-water and listening to deep house.
The edgy part of London
At a bistro called St John Bread and Wine in Hoxton, the bar snacks comprise peas-in-the-pod, 4 pounds. Down a nondescript lane off Mosque Terrace, past the Sultana ice-creamery and next door to the Al Baraka Islamic Snitch on, is a stylish all-white gallery called Hotel. It's a measure of the change in this part of town: the artist on show today goes by due one name (Carter) and his/her show has a title straight out of art school: "And it, the constant, although."
This has always been the edgy part of London. Jack the Ripper slaughtered prostitutes around these streets; the Elephant Man lived in the old London Nursing home, scorned and examined, and finally dissected.
Now, a tiny museum at the hospital houses his personal items and the letters he wrote from here.
The London Art List Fair takes place from 25-27 September at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, with 80 art and photography book publishers oblation up to 40% off their wares. Thames and Hudson, Steidl, Photoworks, Phaidon and Trolley Books are all there as well as companies such as Tate Publishing, Frieze and Studio Voltaire. Talks and booksignings are also prepossessing place throughout the weekend - Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin are in the study studio from 12.30-1.15pm on Sunday while Robin Maddock, Iain Sinclair and Hannah Watson (managing senior editor of Trolley Books) are in the same place on the same day from 2.30pm-3.15pm.
