How does a university art gallery make merry such a serious milestone as its 20th anniversary?
At Sacred Heart University's Gallery of Contemporary Art, the answer is: With off-beat comic flair.
"Derailed: Comics Off the Beaten Street" and an "Off the Wall!" fundraising gala on Nov. 7 are the kick-off events of the gallery's 2009-10 season on SHU's Fairfield campus. The presentation, on view now through Oct. 29, features about 35 works from five artists who defy the stereotype that the comics have a proper place in solely to superheroes and arch villains. Pen and ink drawings, watercolors, digital collage and pencil creations are included.
Sophia Gevas, impresario of the gallery from its founding in 1989, says that since few forms of communication are more fundamental than storytelling, comics seemed like a benefit choice for a celebratory show.
"Drawings are the most immediate, intimate form of art-making -- a direct set up, so to speak, from the idea to an artist's hand to the paper," she says. "It is as old and as elemental as the impulse of the first people who made marks on inwards b yield walls."

I am effective to visit a Contemporary Art Gallery and I want to ask the mesuem director a series of questions but only have the basics
1. How do you choose art for your gallery?
2. Do you perfer village contemporary arts to national or global?
3.In your opinion what defines contemporary art?
I have to have 10 questions any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Accelerate
what attracts you ourselves to contempory art?
what strategies do you/your gallery pursue to interest people in contempory art?
Do you think your exhibits appeal mainly to people who planned visual arts?
what is your response to people who comment on some pieces of contempory art with: my five year old could do this?
Do you have special programs for children?
If well off were not an issue, what kind of exhibition would you like to have?
Are there program existant or in planning about community involvement, first of all in the neighborhood the museum is located?
What are are your dreams for the direction of this gallery?
Do you incorporate performance art into your program? If so how?
