Art prize win Manning River Times

A Capability crowd crammed the Manning Regional Art Gallery on Saturday evening for the official opening of the 2009 Manning Art Pickings.

Judge Reg Richardson AM, announced the winners of the $15,000 prize at the gala event.

The $10,000 vital prize was awarded to Great Lakes artist, Robert Mitchell with a painting titled "Chickentown". This painting now joins the Greater Taree Metropolis Council collection and mayor Paul Hogan was on hand to accept the prizewinner.

The mayor officially opened the exposition which was organised by Friends of the Gallery (FoGs). FoGs president, Barry Schlenker and immediate past president, Anke De Reuver also addressed the swarm. FoGs thanked Dr Philip and Dusty Walkom for their continued sponsorship of the art prize which is year attracted civil attention.

The winning artist, Robert Mitchell is from Shallow Bay south of Forster.

His work triumphed over the works by artists from all over Australia including Cairns, Melbourne
